What is Hyperhidrosis?

Excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, is a common and potentially embarrassing problem. Excessive sweating can stain clothes, complicate relationships, and lead to awkward business and social interactions. Although hyperhidrosis can be a sign of an underlying medical condition, for many patients the only problem is sweaty hands, feet or underarms. This condition is known as primary hyperhidrosis and affects 2-3% of Americans.

How is Primary Hyperhidrosis Diagnosed?

The diagnosis is based primarily on patient symptoms and history. Your primary care physician may need to examine for underlying causes first. If no underlying cause is found, then answer these simple questions to see if you may have primary hyperhidrosis:

  • Does the sweating occur on both sides of your body? For example, both hands/feet or both underarms?
  • Does the sweating affect your daily activities?
  • Do you experience at least one episode per week?
  • Did the symptoms begin before you were 25 years old?
  • Do you have a family history of primary hyperhidrosis?
  • You do not experience excessive sweating when you sleep?

If you answered yes to 2 or more of these questions and the symptoms have been present for more than 6 months you likely have primary hyperhidrosis.

How is hyperhidrosis treated?

Depending on the severity and location of the sweating there are many options for treatment. Over-the-counter or prescription antiperspirants work for many patients. For others, especially with hand or feet hyperhidrosis, iontophoresis may be recommended.  Some patients may require other oral or topical prescription medications. Botulinum toxin is also a very effective treatment that can prevent symptoms for up to 9 months.
