Meet Matt Iorio, MD, FACS
Board Certified Plastic Surgeon
Dr. Matt Iorio is a plastic and reconstructive surgeon specializing in hand surgery, nerve reconstruction, and complex wound and extremity care. A Texas native, he grew up in Phoenix, Arizona before going to college at the University of Chicago.
He attended medical school at Georgetown University and the University of Washington’s Harborview Medical Center, then served on the faculty at Harvard Medical School. After that, he joined the staff of the University of Colorado where he helped build nationally recognized programs in extremity reconstruction, wound care, and orthoplastic surgery. Dr. Iorio is board certified in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery and Surgery of the Hand. He has cared for patients for more than a decade including severe injuries and conditions that many thought could not be treated — helping restore function, preserve limbs, and relieve chronic pain.
Dr. Iorio has also had the privilege of caring for patients with severe trauma, chronic pain, and life-changing injuries. While at the University of Colorado, many of his patients were referred to him after being told amputation was their only option. Through advanced techniques like targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) and complex microsurgery, he has been able to help people preserve function, overcome phantom limb pain, and return to the activities that matter most to them.
He career is exemplary, and he has published more than 130 scientific articles and 24 textbook chapters. In addition, Dr. Iorio has been recognized with such accolades as Teacher of the Year Award (multiple times), the Hand Surgery Research All-Star Award, and ranking in the top 0.5% of microsurgery scholars worldwide. But beyond research and awards, what drives him is working with patients — listening to their goals, solving difficult problems, and providing care that improves their daily lives.
Teaching and mentorship have always been important to Dr. Iorio. He has directed microsurgical training programs, mentored medical students and residents, and lectured nationally and internationally on hand and nerve surgery. Many of his former trainees have gone on to become leaders in the field, of which he is very proud.
When not in the operating room, he enjoys exploring the outdoors — hiking, camping, off-roading, and taking in everything this region has to offer. Durango is the perfect place to combine Dr. Iorio’s professional work with the lifestyle that he loves. Dr. Iorio’s goal is simple: to provide world-class surgical care in a community setting, where patients feel heard, cared for, and supported every step of the way.
