What is Sculptra®?

Different than the fillers made with hyaluronic acid such as Juvederm® and Restylane®, Sculptra® is a brand name of an FDA-approved filler which is made of poly-L-lactic acid. Due to this composition, Sculptra® works to improve the volume of the face and wrinkles in a process which stimulates collage production of the dermal layer of the skin.

Sculptra® is injected with the use of small needles and over time, the stimulated collagen production works to add volume to the facial structures. Since collagen production is a slow process, it generally takes up to 2 months to realize the full effect of the injections. As such, touch up injections may be necessary to achieve the desired result. A full course of treatment typically involves up to 3 sessions of injections which are spaced several months apart.

What is Involved in Sculptra® Treatments?

Sculptra® is only available through authorized healthcare professionals who have the necessary training to inject them. The procedure is performed in the office using a small needle; the needle is passed into the dermis and used to deposit small amounts (aliquots) of poly-L-lactic acid in the desired location. It is generally well tolerated without anesthesia.

Discomfort and downtime are minimal during and after the injection. Even in the most experienced hands, bruising may occur; if it does, it generally resolves within 1 week. Aesthetic results take up to 2 months to fully be realized and may last up to 2 years.
