How Does Accessory Nipple Develop
The development of an accessory nipple occurs around 4 to 5 weeks of development as an embryo in the womb. During development, the baby’s (male or female) breast tissue begins to develop from two lines along the mammary ridge (also called the milk line) which spans from the groin to the breasts to the armpits (axilla) on each side. So there are two mammary ridges. If present, an accessory nipple typically develops along one of these lines.

Removal of the accessory nipple is typically performed in the office under local anesthesia. It is a straight-forward procedure whereby Dr. Williams makes an elliptical excision and removes the nipple. He will then close the incision in a meticulous technique and give you instructions on how to achieve the best scar.
If accessory breast tissue is present with the nipple, this may require a larger incision. For this reason, patients with accessory breast tissue may desire to have this done in the office under local anesthesia or in the operating room under sedation.
Of course, there are risks associated with this procedure such as swelling and bruising. If these occur, they should subside within 2 weeks.
